Environmental Education
Between 2016 and 2022, Hailey worked with schools, camps, and nature centers across the country, teaching others about the natural world, including topics and locations like:
Water quality and estuary science at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, MD
Mountain ecology at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies in Aspen, CO
Tidal ecology at Camp Orkila in Eastsound, WA
Wildlife, coastal ecology, and native flora at the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies in Homer, AK
Wildfire science and ecology at the Sawtooth Interpretive and Historical Association in Stanley, ID
Biology, gardening, and earth sciences at Bayshore Elementary School in San Francisco, CA
Grants & Research
As a grants and research specialist at Arrowleaf Consulting, Hailey helped non-profit and local government organizations secure over $14.7 million dollars in grant funding. This money is now being used to facilitate projects that improve food security, water quality, childcare access and outdoor education opportunities in the Pacific Northwest.
A central tenant of her success in this field is a penchant for quality research and data interpretation. Hailey is also skilled in primary research and retains a certification from CITI in social and behavioral research. She has contributed to numerous feasibility studies and community assessments focused on agriculture, childcare and food systems in eastern Washington. As an undergraduate, Hailey completed a research project on the perceptions of Tanzanian farmers towards climate change which required her to interview about 100 farmers on their agricultural practices and analyze trends and patterns.
Peace Corps
In June 2019, Hailey moved to Malawi, a small country in southeastern Africa. Her service began in the north-central district of Kasungu, where she lived with a host family, learned the local language and attended training courses in everything from culture to medicine to education. In August, Hailey was one of about 60 volunteers officially sworn in to Peace Corps service in Malawi.
During her service, Hailey taught English at Kalambo Community Day Secondary School in Bangula, a town near the southern border with Mozambique. Along with her daily teaching schedule, Hailey collaborated with a fellow teacher, Martin Jjilika, to organize a Grassroots Soccer club; these clubs use soccer to teach young people about HIV, with the goal of destigmatizing the disease, reducing transmission rates, and improving outcomes for those affected. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic cut Hailey’s service short, and she returned to the U.S. in March 2020. However, on trip to Malawi in 2023, Hailey learned that the Grassroots Soccer club continues to thrive at Kalambo CDSS, thanks to the dedication of Mr. Njilika.
Outdoor Adventuring
Beyond her professional ventures, Hailey is an avid explorer and spends much of her free time exploring the outdoors. Her adventures have taken her to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro and underground, into the famed caves of eastern Vietnam, but most of her time is spent in the Rocky Mountain West. Hailey is Wilderness First Responder certified through NOLS and has completed numerous additional trainings on safety in the outdoors.
While always up for a new challenge, Hailey’s main outdoor sports include backpacking, hiking, climbing and cross country skiing.
